Exercise as Diabetes treatment

Why is exercise the best treatment for Diabetes?

Evidence suggests that tailored and supervised exercise is beneficial for both prevention and treatment of Diabetes.

If you have diabetes, being active makes your body more sensitive to insulin (the hormone that allows cells in your body to use blood sugar for energy), which helps manage your diabetes. Physical activity also helps control blood sugar levels and lowers your risk of heart disease and nerve damage.

Why is exercise physiology best for your situation?

“Peoples’ risk of developing diabetes is greatly increased by several factors including high blood pressure, overweight or obesity, insufficient physical activity, and poor diet,” says Mr. Kelly.

Although there is no known cure, exercise – when prescribed by a suitably qualified exercise professional – is a powerful tool for managing the physical effects of diabetes.

Exercise helps to:

  • Make insulin work more effectively
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Reduce your risk of heart disease

What are the benefits of specific resistance training for Diabetes?

Resistance training and aerobic exercise both helped to lower insulin resistance in previously sedentary older adults with abdominal obesity at risk for diabetes. Combining the two types of exercise proved more beneficial than doing either one alone.

All forms of exercise—aerobic, resistance, or doing both (combined training)—were equally good at lowering HbA1c values in people with diabetes.

Can i do cardio and resistance exercise?

Yes. A combination of cardiovascular exercise and resistance training i the best way to go.

The W.H.O, Diabetes Australia and ESSA all agree!

People living with chronic conditions (type 2 diabetes).

  • should do at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity or at least 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity.
  • should also do muscle-strengthening activities at moderate or greater intensity that involve all major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week, as these provide additional health benefits.
